For every child who has ever attended the annual Thanksgiving Day parade, the culmination of all the excitement is when Santa Claus comes at the end of the parade, waving to young and old alike from the back of a vintage fire engine. It is then that St. Nick collects the first letters, listing the wishes of all good girls and boys. And, Santa is often found riding through neighborhoods in the back of a fire engine, right up to Christmas Eve. The fire engine that Santa is riding in is a 1932 Ford AA open engine. In the first part of the century, many fire trucks were adapted from commercial trucks and customized with special fire apparatus. The Ford Model AA was a favorite. Introduced in 1929 with the Model A automobile (Ford differentiated its truck and automobile line simply by doubling the letter), the Model AA truck had an in-line water-cooled, 4-cylinder engine with a 200.5 cubic inch displacement. The following year, four-speed transmission became standard equipment. In 1932, Henry Ford introduced his first low-priced V-8 engine, and the resulting truck was the Model BB. On March 9, 1932, the last Model AA rolled off the line, further enhancing the importance of the 1932 Ford Model AA in automotive history. Now Santa rides upon the classic Ford fire engine in this authentic 1:43 scale die-cast replica from Matchbox Collectibles, "the greatest name in die-cast." |
